Privacy
This site sets no cookies, runs no scripts and loads nothing from anywhere else. It has no accounts, no forms and no analytics. When you visit, the web server receives the information needed to answer your request. What it keeps is described below. The only other information SpeyBench has about you is whatever you choose to put in an email.
Who is responsible
SpeyBench is a trading name of Spey Systems Ltd, a company registered in Scotland (SC889983). In data protection law the company is the controller of the information described here. It is registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office, reference ZC166579.
Questions about any of this go to service@speybench.com. One person reads that mailbox.
When you visit
The server keeps a log of requests, as web servers do. Each line records the address the request came from (your IP address), the date and time, what was asked for and whether it was found, the page that linked to it if your browser says, and how your browser describes itself.
The log is there to keep the site running and to notice misuse. Software on the server reads it automatically and blocks, for a time, addresses that make abusive requests. A block lasts at most seven days, and the address is released when it ends. The log is not used to follow anyone and is not combined with anything else.
Log lines are deleted within 15 days. The server as a whole is backed up daily and seven backups are kept, so a copy can remain in a backup for up to seven days longer.
The law calls the basis for this legitimate interests: a site has to be kept working and secure, and a short log is the least that does it.
When you write
The only way to give SpeyBench information about yourself is to send an email. Nothing on the site collects it for you.
If you write to register interest, your email address is used for one thing: to tell you the bench is open. You will get one email. The camera details you send are kept with your note so that the reply can be about your camera. Ask at any time and the note and your address are deleted. Otherwise the note is kept until you have been told the bench is open, and for no more than a year after that.
If you write with a correction, an observation or a question, your message is used to answer you and, where it bears on a Bench Note, to check the point on the bench. A correction that is confirmed is recorded in the note’s revision history. Your name is not published unless you ask for it to be.
The basis in law for both kinds of message is legitimate interests: you wrote, and your message is used to do what you asked, to answer you and to keep the notes right.
Please send no more than is needed. SpeyBench does not ask for a postal address, a phone number or payment details, because nothing is being booked or sold yet.
Where it is kept, and who else handles it
Two companies handle this information for SpeyBench, and only to provide their service. Hetzner Online GmbH hosts the server, in Germany; the request log and the server’s backups are there. Proton AG, in Switzerland, provides the mailbox; your emails are there.
Both countries are covered by UK adequacy regulations, meaning the UK recognises their data protection law as giving equivalent protection. Nothing is sold, used for advertising or given to anyone else, unless the law requires it.
How long it is kept
Log lines are kept for up to 15 days, and in the server’s backups for up to seven days beyond that. An enquiry, whether a question, a correction or an observation, is deleted a year after the last message in it. A note registering interest is kept until you have been told the bench is open, however long that takes, and for no more than a year after that. You can ask for any of these to be deleted sooner.
Your rights
You can ask for a copy of what is held about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, or ask for its use to be restricted.
You can also object to the use of your information. Legitimate interests is the basis for everything on this page, so the right to object covers all of it. An objection to the notification email is always honoured: the note and your address are deleted.
Write to service@speybench.com. There is no form and no charge, and a reply is due within one month.
If something is wrong
If you think your information has been handled wrongly, say so at the same address. A complaint is acknowledged within 30 days and answered without undue delay. If the answer does not settle it, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint or on 0303 123 1113.
Workshop records
The bench is not yet accepting cameras. When it does, servicing a camera will mean keeping a record of the work and of who sent it, including the emails about it. That is a separate matter from this website and is not covered here: it will be explained to you before you send anything. The website has no access to the workshop’s records.
