Colophon

SpeyBench is a small workshop for the Nikon F and F2, and this is its website. It is kept small and plain on purpose. What is wanted of work at the bench is wanted here too: that it is clear, that it is useful, that nothing is there for show, and that it can still be understood later.

The name

There is no symbol. The name is set in capitals above a single rule. The rule is the bench.

Where the name fits, the name is used. In the few places it cannot fit, such as a browser tab or a square icon, the S is used with a short length of the same rule.

It is drawn in one colour, so it can be printed, stamped or engraved as it stands.

Type

Everything meant to be read is set in Fira Sans. Part numbers in the Bench Notes are set in Fira Sans Condensed. The name is not type on the page: it is a drawing, made from the letters of Michroma.

Fira Sans and Fira Sans Condensed are copyright 2012–2015 The Mozilla Foundation and Telefonica S.A., and are used under the SIL Open Font License, version 1.1, as issued with them. Michroma is copyright 2011 The Michroma Project Authors.

Colour

The site uses black ink on a slightly softened white. Red is reserved for small index marks showing a current or selected position.

The site

The pages are built in advance with Astro and served as plain files by nginx. Each is ordinary HTML, with CSS written for this site. There is no JavaScript, because nothing here needs it yet.

Nothing is fetched from anywhere else: the fonts and the stylesheets come from this site. The aim is a site that is quick on a modest phone or a slow connection, with little in it to go wrong.

The one thing that moves is the frame counter on the home page, shown on wider screens. It is a drawing, wound on by the stylesheet, and it keeps still if your device asks for less motion.

Bench Notes

The Public Bench Notes are issued documents as well as web pages. Each has a page to read here and a PDF for print and the bench, and each carries a revision letter and the month it was issued.

A note’s address always leads to its current revision. When a note is revised, the revision before it is not overwritten: it keeps its own letter and remains identifiable.

The site is handed finished material to publish. It has no access to the workshop’s own records.

Made in Scotland

The bench is in the Scottish Highlands, and the site is made there.
